Library And Media Center Strategic Plan-Draft
Part One: Mission Statement:
The Library and Media Center provides high quality information services developed to support the college's curriculum.
Part Two: Collection and Access Policies:
Faculty recommendations are the most common method by which the print and non-print collections are updated. Such requests are given the highest priority by the librarian as to how library funds are spent. Each Division is informed as to the general "range" of available funds at the beginning of the Fall Semester.
The local collections have been supplemented by a comprehensive range of web-based resources. None of the subscription fees, or other related expenses, are passed on to our patrons. To gain access patrons utilize the titles under the heading "Databases" in the Library and Media Center's web site.
As vendors improve their web resources, the Library and Media Center is quick in taking the necessary steps to implement such upgrades. Listed below are some of the service improvements:
1. Fiscal year 2008 saw some major database enhancements from the services available from vendors such as EBSCO, Serials Solutions and new consortia arrangements with other institutions of higher education in the State of New Mexico. They are as follows:
a. Continued expansion of access to databases by Vendor’s who do not charge extra for full text journals usage. Serials Solutions is now linking 15,500 journals in the databases we subscribe to (duplication does occur however in this title count).
b. Stream lining the process by which the full text article appears to the patron by Serials Solutions 360 link.
c. Incorporation of Interlibrary loan subsystem access to eleven EBSCO databases to facilitate acquisition of non-full text coverage for articles that are not already in full-text.
d. Changing to citation only (indexed) access for 11 FirstSearch databases. Dissertation abstracts, as well as WorldCat, are still available.
2. Now that the vendors provided monthly utilization reports it is easy to collect reliable statistics such as the number of full-text articles printed, etc.
For additional information on our resources and services please come to the Library and Media Center (Room 206) and pick up a printed guide.
Part Three: Information Literacy--Faculty and Library Efforts:
The most effective method used for "bibliographical instruction" has been the classroom session. We anticipate that the expansion of the web site to cover not only the class assignment sections of syllabi, but recommended resources will further strengthen the ability of our students/faculty to succeed with meeting graduate outcome number 9: "Computer and Information Literacy".
Part Four: Evaluation & Effectiveness:
The Library and Media Center has been judged by past North Central Accreditation teams as being in full compliance with the criteria of evaluation. Additional discussion may be needed as the campus develops its new "AQIP" Model for measuring continuous development in the education design and delivery process, which includes the Library and Media Center component.
Part Five: Goals and Objectives:
1. To support the instructional program in it's efforts to measure Graduate Outcome #9: Computer and information literacy.
2. Maintain library staff training with key vendors.
3. Continued staff involvement in serving on campus committees, particularly those related to curriculum, instruction, technology and professional issues.
