What is the career development center?

The CDC is a comprehensive student, faculty, and community support facility designed to provide a centralized location to meet career development and job placement needs.  Services include:

Academic Advising And College Transfer Information:  The CDC offers academic advising to new and returning students, as well as transfer information to another university.

Career Guidance:  The CDC can offer assistance in helping you determine career changes, as well as finding out what occupations match your personal interests:

  • Keirsey Temperament Sorter:  (a personality assessment based on the Myers-Briggs personality theory), is very useful in helping you make a decision about your future.

  • Choices:  Choices software matches your interests with various occupations.  You can research occupations to obtain information regarding description, education, skills, abilities, and earnings.  Information is also available on Post Secondary Schools, Graduate Schools, and Financial Aid Scholarships.

AS 102:  Career Planning And Development:  This is a one-credit class offered every Fall and Spring semester which emphasizes career development and job seeking skills.  Topics range from self awareness and decision-making to job search skills.

  • Get prepared for interviews with the Interview Simulator

  • Learn tips to negotiate salary

College Catalog Library:  The CDC has catalogs from universities and colleges in New Mexico and in Texas.  The CDC has access to colleges and universities around the country via the internet.

Career Resource Library:  We carry the Encyclopedia of Careers, Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT), Occupational Outlook Handbook, Occupational Wage Survey, New Mexico Labor Market Review, and the New Mexico Employment Projections, as well as other career-oriented publications.

Employment Registers:  We regularly receive the following New Mexico publications: Labor Market Review, Department of Labor's Job Hunter's Guide, Occupational Wage Survey, and Employment Projections.

Job Placement Assistance:  As a student or graduate of NMSU-C, you may register your credentials with our office and have access to information on local, state, and national employment opportunities.

Cooperative Education & Internships:  Cooperative education is available to all currently enrolled NMSU-C students who qualify.  Coop/Internships provide experience-based learning for college students through employment in practical, curriculum-related work assignments.

Work Study:  The CDC posts available work study positions within NMSU-C for students who qualify.

Workforce Investment Act (WIA), Formerly JTPA:  Interested applicants apply with the New Mexico Department of Labor One-Stop Career Center.  If found eligible, you may qualify for 104 weeks of classroom training which amounts to an Associate's Degree (covers tuition, books, and supplies).

Alliance For Minority Participation (AMP)The AMP Program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  It is designed for underrepresented minority students earning their Bachelor's degree in the fields of science, math, engineering and technology.  Scholarships of up to $500.00 are available for those who qualify.
